BEFORE YOU REQUEST A QUOTE
Should you shortlist Champion?
Consider it when: Shortlist the exact Champion package when its published LP/NG output and included fleX or aXis transfer equipment match the electrical design and local service scope.
Hold off when: Pause if a quoted 22/26 kW family name hides the switch amperage, controller type, optional modules or who performs warranty work.
Conditional editorial interpretation of the cited manufacturer sources. Not a tested reliability ranking, individual-home sizing approval or claim of local dealer availability.
What this Champion guide covers
This is an independent buyer-research page about Champion residential standby systems. It is not a Champion sales page, dealer page, field-reliability study, or hands-on product test. We use Champion’s own current product pages, manuals, warranty material, and installation guidance for Champion-specific facts, then separate those facts from buyer questions and unknowns.
Champion’s current home-standby catalog contains multiple generator/ATS packages. The important unit of comparison is therefore the exact package model, selected fuel, transfer-switch rating, load-management plan, and site-specific installation scope—not simply the Champion brand name or a headline kW number.
Current Champion model families a homeowner is likely to encounter
Champion’s current catalog includes 26 kW fleX systems, 22 kW fleX systems, 22 kW aXis systems, and additional lower-output/select-circuit products. The catalog also varies the included transfer-switch amperage across packages. That means two “Champion 22 kW” or “Champion 26 kW” quotes may not contain the same switch or control architecture.
| Example package | Published output | Included transfer equipment | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 201614 · 26 kW fleX | 26 kW LP · 23.4 kW NG | 200 A service-entrance fleX ATS | Current high-output example; exact load modules and managed appliances should be stated in the quote. |
| 201613 · 26 kW fleX | 26 kW LP · 23.4 kW NG | 150 A service-entrance fleX ATS | Same published generator output as 201614, but a different included switch rating. |
| 201612 · 26 kW fleX | 26 kW LP · 23.4 kW NG | 100 A service-entrance fleX ATS | Do not compare package price with a 200 A system without accounting for switch/service scope. |
| 201222 · 22 kW aXis | 22 kW LP · 19.8 kW NG | 200 A aXis ATS | Different controller/load-management architecture from fleX; accessory scope still needs to be documented. |
This table is a buyer-orientation snapshot, not a promise that every model remains available in every region or dealer channel. Confirm the exact model numbers on the current manufacturer page and the written proposal.

The 201614 and 201222 records should not be treated as interchangeable. They differ in published output, controller family, enclosure details, fuel-use figures, sound figure, and package context. A salesperson saying “Champion whole-house generator” is not enough detail for a serious comparison.
aXis vs fleX: what a buyer should verify
Champion markets both aXis and fleX whole-house control/load-management systems. For the current 26 kW fleX package, Champion says the programmable controller can assign appliance priorities and use power-line-carrier communication to reduce separate control wiring. The 22 kW aXis product pages likewise describe managed-load operation, but the equipment and package architecture are not identical.
Do not choose between aXis and fleX from a marketing label alone. Ask the dealer to show, in writing, the exact controller/ATS model, which loads are always available, which loads can be delayed or shed, the number and model of any load-management modules, and what happens when several high-demand appliances call at once.
Sizing: Champion’s selector is useful, but square footage is not the final answer
Champion provides a home-standby selector and dealer workflow, which can be useful for narrowing the product family. But a final system design still needs a load-based assessment tied to the appliances and motors the homeowner expects to run, the actual fuel, the electrical service, and the planned load-management strategy.
The same nominal generator can publish different output on propane and natural gas. For example, Champion publishes 26 kW on propane and 23.4 kW on natural gas for 201614. A quote should therefore show the fuel-specific rating used in the load analysis rather than only the larger marketing number.
Use our load-based sizing guide to prepare the appliance list and starting-load questions before speaking with an installer.
Champion installation guidance: useful manufacturer context, not a universal code rule
Champion’s site-survey guide says a complete project can include the generator, automatic transfer switch, any power-management modules, site placement, electrical connections, gas or propane work, fittings/connections, batteries, permits/code considerations, and ongoing maintenance. That is exactly why an installed quote should be normalized line by line instead of compared only by total price.
Champion’s own site-survey article also discusses placement near a wall where permitted, separation from building openings, avoiding installation under decking, pad/site preparation, gas-pipe length, and possible gas-meter upgrades. Treat those statements as Champion-specific planning guidance, not universal clearance rules. The exact installation manual for the quoted model, adopted local code, gas utility requirements, and the authority having jurisdiction control the real installation.
See our pad and placement guide and installation process guide for the questions to ask without turning web content into DIY instructions.
Champion warranty: the headline term needs year-by-year context
Champion currently advertises a 10-year limited warranty on the cited home-standby generator packages, while the cited 201614 and 201222 product pages identify a separate 2-year limited warranty for the transfer switch.
The linked 201202 manual provides air-cooled warranty context, but its applicability to the exact 201614 package still needs confirmation. That document states: the generator term is 10 years or 2,000 hours, whichever occurs first; years 1–2 are described as limited comprehensive coverage on mileage, labor, and parts, while years 3–10 are described as limited comprehensive coverage on parts only. The document also ties coverage to successful activation, proof of purchase and maintenance, and authorized/certified service conditions.
That does not make Champion “better” or “worse” by itself. It means a buyer should compare the actual labor, travel, parts, ATS, maintenance, transferability, and claim-path language rather than ranking brands by the largest warranty-year number.
Use the warranty comparison to put those terms beside other brands.
Manuals, parts information, and documentation are a Champion strength
Champion exposes product manuals and diagrams by exact model number and its current product pages include download sections for operator manuals, installation manuals, parts information, and related fact sheets where available. That is useful primary-source material for verifying dimensions, fuel figures, switch details, maintenance instructions, and installation requirements before purchase.
For any proposal, save the exact generator manual, transfer-switch manual, warranty document, and parts/service information that apply to the quoted model. Do not rely on a dealer brochure alone, and do not assume a manual for one 22 kW or 26 kW Champion package applies unchanged to another.
Champion-specific questions to put in a written proposal
- What are the exact Champion generator package and transfer-switch model numbers?
- Is the system aXis or fleX, and what practical difference does that make for this house?
- What is the published output on the fuel that will actually be used?
- Which load-management modules are included, and which appliances or circuits will they control?
- Which high-demand loads can operate simultaneously, and which may be delayed or shed?
- Who verifies natural-gas pressure/flow or propane storage/regulator capacity for this exact model?
- What site work, pad/base, trenching, electrical work, fuel work, permits, inspections, startup, and owner orientation are included?
- Which exact generator and ATS warranty documents apply, and who handles local warranty service?
- Who is responsible for activation/registration and for documenting required maintenance?
- Which items are allowances, exclusions, or possible change orders?
Then use the 16-line quote checklist to compare the Champion proposal with Generac, KOHLER/Rehlko, Briggs & Stratton, Cummins, or another qualified quote on the same scope.
What Champion’s own website cannot prove for an independent buyer
- It cannot independently prove Champion has a lower field failure rate than Generac, KOHLER/Rehlko, Briggs & Stratton, or Cummins.
- It cannot prove that the nearest dealer will provide fast or high-quality service in your ZIP code.
- It cannot turn a manufacturer sound figure into a standardized independent acoustic comparison across brands.
- It cannot convert a product specification into a site-specific installed cost.
- It cannot decide whether the Champion control/ATS architecture is the best fit for your particular electrical service and priority loads.
That is the role Standby Generator Guide should fill: use Champion as the primary source for Champion facts, then compare those facts with other manufacturers, normalize the installer quotes, and leave unknowns clearly marked instead of inventing a universal winner.
